  17. SETTLERS II requires around 7MB
  18. of free XMS memory. If you do not
  19. have enough XMS memory available,
  20. the program will first try to run
  21. in a memory-saving mode. This
  22. means that certain graphics will
  23. not be loaded. If this does not
  24. work either, you could try running
  25. the program without music. To do
  26. this, start with the NOSOUND.BAT
  27. batch file.

  35. To reduce loading time we recommend
  36. using the "SMARTDRV" program.

  43. Two-player mode:

  45. A second mouse is needed to play
  46. this game in two-player mode. It
  47. should be noted that Player One
  48. (the player on the left of the
  49. screen) uses the mouse which is
  50. supported by the mouse driver. The
  51. second mouse is anticipated on the
  52. other COM port. Mice are only
  53. supported by COM port 1 and COM
  54. port 2.

  56. "free play" mode (see below).

  62. Screen display - VESA driver:

  64. SETTLERS II supports the VESA
  65. VBE standard for the support of
  66. SuperVGA graphics. Many SuperVGA
  67. graphics cards are directly
  68. compatible with VESA VBE.

  70. If you have problems with your
  71. graphics card, try the following
  72. procedures:
  73.  
  74. 1. If you have received a VESA VBE
  75. driver with your graphics card,
  76. install this and then try running
  77. the game. Many VESA VBE drivers can
  78. be installed directly from DOS.
  79. Follow the instructions in your
  80. graphics card manual.

  82. 2. In case you do not have a VESA
  83. VBE driver for your graphics card
  84. or your VESA VBE driver does not
  85. function with this game, we have
  86. included the UniVBE VESA VBE driver
  87. on this CD. To install the UniVBE
  88. VESA VBE driver, you must only run
  89. the INSTALL.EXE program in the UNIVBE
  90. directory on the CD. Please note
  91. that the UniVBE driver is Shareware.
  92. Do not forget to register if the
  93. UniVBE driver is to help you further
  94. with this game.

  96. installation to  register this
  97. copy of the UniVBE.

  104. with the Autorun option, please go to
  105. the AUTORUN.TXT file. There you
  106. will find a list of possible fault
  107. sources.

  113. As soon as a player attacks his
  114. allies, these become his enemy. At
  115. the same time, the allies of the
  116. people attacked become the attacker's
  117. enemies.
  118. In the statistics window players
  119. can check which computer enemy is
  120. currently allied with whom. The
  121. colors of the allies are shown as
  122. small rectangles in the players'
  123. portraits.

  129. In the headquarters and storehouses
  130. it is now possible to decide for
  131. all merchandise and workers
  132. individually whether they may be
  133. stored in this special warehouse

  143. Players can choose how many soldiers
  144. are to protect the headquarters.

  164. emergency program has been activated"
  165. in the message window, your remaining
  166. stores of wood have been reserved for
  167. building a woodcutter's hut and a
  168. sawmill.
